500Kites celebrating the power of the wind September 15th, 2009 by teamstroud5050

Over 1500 hundred people turned up at Thistledown Environmental Centre near Nailsworth on Sunday 13th September for the free event. We gave away nearly 500 kites, and plenty of free soft drinks courtesy of Bottlegreen. Plus with a professional kite demonstration, fantastic kite flying weather, and a nearly sold out ice cream van – we couldn’t have asked for more.

The event took place amidst 70 acres of natural environment and wildlife in the shadow of Gloucestershire’s first and currently only wind turbine at Nympsfield, and proved a cracking location to celebrate the power of the wind and launch our Stroud5050 campaign to make 50% of our local energy green. Thanks to all who attended and helped make this such a great day.

  1. Gill - September 14, 2009 at 9:12 am Just a quick note to congratulate you on yesterday's event. My girls, their friends and all their parents said it was brilliant. I agree.

How great that a local company can host such an event for the community free of charge. Another great feature was that there wasn't the usual collection of money-grabbing stalls like bouncy castle and face-painting to cause friction between kids and parents. Just simple fresh air, lots of space, and a clear focus.

    Brill. Loved it.
  2. Paul - September 15, 2009 at 1:14 pm I took 4 kids with me aged 10-12 and they had a great time... feedback from the mouths of babes was "next year it would be good if there were more places to spend money" - haha - I am not so sure about that ;-)

The gods of wind were with us too.. Hurrah! I am a born again kite nut now thanks ;-)
    • Nicole - September 15, 2009 at 1:03 pm Haha - how sad that the event wasn't commercial enough for your young brood. ;-)

Location was great, weather was perfect, people were fab - what a nice way to showcase all the wind does for us.

p.s where have kites been all my life? Sooo much fun....
      • Paul - September 16, 2009 at 9:06 am Indeed... they didn't have any cash to spend anyhow ;-)

I would have bought them a kite though if there were some for sale (erm - like when you buy your wife a chainsaw for xmas ;-) )
  3. Simba - September 15, 2009 at 2:01 pm the ice cream van was my favourite bit, also watching David's son fly 3 feet (or was it metres?) into the air! lol

  5. knwldgmn - September 24, 2009 at 3:33 pm all a huge over simplification motivated by a self publicist for his own ends - how ridiculous to allow such blatant brainwashing
    • Paul S - September 24, 2009 at 4:57 pm Paul S here - Blog manager.

Now now - this blog is supposed to be a discussion about the whether you support the concept of powering 50% of Stroud Districts energy from renewable energy.

ETA: It was just a fun family day out celebrating the power of the wind - I didn't notice you were commenting on this thread at first!

Did you go to the kite event?
